ICH secondary to trauma and vascular causes is emphasized, but ICH due to primary or metastatic neoplasms is not discussed. The most common vascular causes of ICH are discussed, but this article is not intended to be inclusive of all causes of ICH. Here we review the imaging of ICH with the goal of providing a broad overview of the diverse causes and varied appearances of ICH. Neuroimaging is essential for the treating physician to understand the location and volume of hemorrhage, the risk of impending cerebral injury, and to guide often emergent patient treatment. ICH may occur in multiple intracranial compartments and may be caused by diverse pathology. The incidence of ICH is approximately 25 per 100,000 person-years, and it has a mortality of 40% within one month of presentation. Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a significant medical event that accounts for up to 15% of strokes.
